ARABICA VS. ROBUSTA: Why we chose premium Arabica

Not all coffee beans are created equal. The two most common species—Arabica and Robusta—may look similar, but they differ in where they grow, how they taste, and what's inside each bean.

At Broken Road Coffee Company, we use only premium Arabica beans. Here's why.

GROWING REGION
Arabica thrives in higher elevations with cooler climates and rich soil. It's more delicate, but this slower growth creates a more complex, higher quality bean. Robusta grows in lower elevations and hotter climates and is hardier and easier (and cheaper) to grow.

FLAVOR PROFILE
Arabica is known for its smooth, nuanced flavors with notes that can range from fruity and floral to nutty and chocolatey. Robusta is bolder, more bitter, and often has a harsh, "rubber-like" aftertaste.

CAFFEINE CONTENT
Robusta beans contain nearly twice the caffeine of Arabica. The higher caffeine content can be difficult for caffeine-sensitive people.

QUALITY
Arabica beans are larger, denser, and higher quality. They're carefully handpicked for peak ripeness and are less likely to have defects.

WHY ARABICA IS BETTER
Arabica takes more time and care to grow. It costs more, but the result is worth it—a smoother, richer, more enjoyable cup of coffee.
